Oxford Ionics
About
Oxford Ionics is a UK-based quantum computing company that pioneered trapped ion technology manufactured using standard semiconductor chips, achieving world records for trapped ion fidelity. In June 2025, IonQ announced acquisition for $1.075 billion ($1.065B stock + $10M cash), completed September 2025.
UK government approved acquisition under National Security and Investment Act with conditions: hardware and core operations must remain in Britain. This ensures technology development continues in UK while benefiting from IonQ's resources and commercialization capabilities.
Integration plans with IonQ: 256 physical qubits at 99.99% accuracy by 2026, 10,000+ physical qubits at 99.99999% logical accuracy by 2027, 2 million physical qubits by 2030.
The acquisition strengthens IonQ's vertical integration strategy and brings world-class ion trap technology and manufacturing expertise. Oxford Ionics' approach using standard semiconductor processes enables scalable production of high-fidelity quantum processors.
