Iceberg Quantum
About
Iceberg Quantum is an Australian quantum architecture company founded in 2024 by University of Sydney PhD alumni Sam Smith, Larry Cohen, and Felix Thomsen. The company designs fault-tolerant quantum architectures based on LDPC (Low-Density Parity-Check) codes that reduce hardware overhead for quantum error correction by over an order of magnitude compared to surface codes. In March 2025, Iceberg raised $2 million in pre-seed funding led by Blackbird with participation from LocalGlobe. The company has established partnerships with PsiQuantum to develop low-overhead fault-tolerant architectures for photonic quantum computing, with Diraq for spin qubit systems, and with Oxford Ionics for trapped ion platforms. Current approaches like surface codes require up to 1,000 physical qubits per logical qubit; Iceberg's LDPC-based architectures aim to dramatically reduce this ratio, making useful quantum computing possible much sooner.
